TrekSierra | Yosemite & Mammoth Lakes Premium Backpacking Guide Service All Inclusive
Pack llamas have been used for thousands of years, originating in the Andes of South America where they were domesticated by Indigenous peoples as early as 4000–5000 years ago. In the late 20th century, llamas were reintroduced in other parts of the world—especially North America—as efficient, low-impact pack animals for backcountry travel, valued for their sure-footedness, endurance, and minimal environmental impact. Humans have relied on llamas for over 4,000 years for transport, wool, meat, and even fertilizer (their droppings are great compost!).

Surprising to many- llamas create as much trail impact as the average deer! Their padded, two-toed feet give them excellent grip and cause less trail damage than hooved animals. They are able to go off trail and in places that mules and deer cannot go.In fact- an average horse or mule is equal to 18 llamas as far as trail impact goes. Not only are they calm and easy to manage, but a pair of llamas can carry 150lbs of your group’s gear, allowing for many luxuries you would not consider bringing into the backcountry otherwise! Llamas truly make the best trail companions. Llamas don’t whinny or bray—they mostly hum—so they don’t disrupt the backcountry vibe. Many people find hiking with llamas relaxing and fun; they have curious, gentle personalities, and kids or beginners can lead a llama, making trips incredibly memorable!
All of our Treks that are llama “friendly” have the option to book a llama supported trek right alongside the option for a regular backpacking trip (for an additional cost). Just use the drop down menu to choose the trip length option first. Keep in mind- choosing a llama supported trek is like having 3 porters EVERY DAY on your trip!
Note: “Each person in the group must choose a llama supported trek if llamas are to be used”
